In my first placement, an inquisitive group of Kindergarten students engaged in hands-on learning about polar bears and the arctic region. This multi-class lesson opened with students contributing their knowledge about polar bears and sharing experiences from the Assiniboine Zoo. With a list of essential questions, we navigated through non-fiction texts, noting our findings and inquiring further based on student interest.

Next, students related this knowledge in an art activity, creating their own polar bears, using a variety of skills including tracing, cutting and gluing. Students had relative creative freedom, picking from a few polar bear stencils and using paint and glitter to create a snowy background.

With their masterpieces complete, we looped back to the information we learned about polar bears where students shared their knowledge with the class.

I really enjoyed connecting non-fiction texts and art. I think this lesson was memorable as students created unique pieces and incorporated their takeaways from our research.
