The Perfect Animal by Raquel Diaz Reguera was a book for my 3-year-old daughter. The first time I read this book, I saw so many incredible curricular connections, I couldn't wait to bring this into the classroom!

Fall 2020, in the Grade 3 class at Austin Elementary in my third practicum, I used this book in a lesson to examine the idea "perfect". In a philosophical sense, "perfection" is a subjective term that is different for each of us.

An entertaining BBC video was used to activate student interest before diving into the book. We then explored the idea of "perfect" as a group by considering characteristics and traits of various animals that could be combined to create the perfect animal. Students used these ideas and worked independently to describe and justify their choices.

This lesson led into an art activity, using a variety of supplies and textures, students could bring their ideas to life and present their creations. The big idea that "perfect" means something different to each person was emphasized throughout, encouraging students to embrace our differences!

I really enjoyed teaching this lesson. Students were engaged throughout and were able to explore their imaginations. I see potential to use this book and adapt this lesson for other grade levels.
